there is a safety device made onto the pilot light. it is the thermocoupler. it shuts off the gas when the pilot is out. it should prevent gas from leaking. if you do not smell gas, you should be OK.

you should definitely shut it off and call a repairman. you have a very dangerous situation on you hands. stop looking at the puty and call them now.

ther should be red knob ther put it on off leave for about 10 min then try relight when u light it hold it down for about 3 to 4 min it will light it need to warm the thermal coupler i think
